neural cartographies: experiments

Neuron
Any of the impulse-conducting cells that constitute the brain, spinal column, and nerves, consisting of a nucleated cell body with one or more dendrites and a single axon.

Cartography
The art or technique of making maps or charts.
From the French cartographie for map and, further back, the Latin charta or carta for paper made from papyrus, as well as the greek graphia for writing.

In the seventeenth century, Dutch microscopist Anton van Leeuwenhoek used a mixture of brandy and saffron to stain muscle specimens in order to examine neural networks.  The 'ink' in these three drawings is the same mixture, steeped overnight.
